Working in wet conditions, soft soil or in uneven terrain can be a nightmare for crane operators, as we discussed in our recent blog post. However, you also need to consider another major factor in determining the right crane mat for your job site – what will you be using for equipment?
The size and weight of heavy machinery varies greatly from rig to rig, and plays a vital role in determining the right mat selection. Two cranes that occupy the same amount of space may be drastically different weights, meaning that the lighter crane will not need as large a surface area as the heavier one. This is due to the need to more evenly distribute a greater amount of weight through the mat structure. Thus, heavier cranes mean larger mats.
You should also take into account the expected weight loads that your crane will need to handle. If you will be moving small trees, lifting light piping, or performing minor earthmoving operations, you won’t be adding as much stress to the mat platform as with heavy construction work. While wood offers natural give and flexibility versus other materials, the stability can be compromised if you put too much stress on the mat. Estimate your intended crane operation, and be sure to take that into account when planning out your crane mat needs.
